A new article of mine, The Avian Flu Threat is Real, was posted today by OpEdNews and ZNet. I counter a recent article by Lucinda Marshall [The Ultimate Chicken Joke], which argues that the avian flu threat is largely bogus and is hyped to enable the US government to enrich the drug companies.
It is certainly understandable that people would be wary of claims by the Bush administration, given its repeated record of exaggeration and deception. However, incorrect conclusions in this instance could prove very dangerous if they undermine attempts to mobilize the government behind much needed public health initiatives. [As noted previoisly, Revere, the blogger on the progressive public health site Effect Measure, has also taken on one of the conspiracy theories endorsed by Marshall in his The Rumsfeld - Tamiflu meme.]
