Another effect of global warming: earthquakes and volcanic activity
June 11th, 2006
The Wall Street Journal reports that melting of glaciers will increase earthquake and seismic activity. [How Melting Glaciers Alter Earth's Surface, Spur Quakes, Volcanoes] The idea is that melting glaciers changes the weight distribution on the earth’s surface and that the earth rebounds:
The reason is that one cubic meter of ice weighs just over a ton, and glaciers can be hundreds of meters thick. When they melt and the water runs off, it is literally a weight off Earth’s crust. The crust and mantle therefore bounce back, immediately as well as over thousands of years. That “isostatic rebound,” according to studies of prehistoric and recent earthquakes and volcanoes, can make the planet’s seismic plates slip catastrophically, and cause magma chambers that feed volcanoes to act like bottles of shaken seltzer.
The main evidence is from prior geologic history:
That link has reared its ugly head in the past, especially during periods of rapid climate change such as the end of ice ages. When ice sheets retreated 10,000 years ago, for instance, Iceland experienced a surge in volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes in the Mediterranean, Antarctica and eastern California also seem to have been awakened by retreating ice.
When he analyzed 800,000 years of activity from about 50 volcanoes in eastern California (the age of rocks formed from volcanic ash can be determined by radioactive dating), Prof. Glazner found that “the peaks of volcanic activity occurred when ice was retreating globally. At first I thought it was crazy, but other scientists also found evidence that climate affects volcanism.” The likely mechanism: glacial retreat lifts pressure that had kept the magma conduit closed.

If you look close and do some research on volcanos, you would find there are 1500 miles of volcanic activity under the Artic and surrounding areas! That is the main reason that’s the artic ice is shrinking and the permofrost in Alaska is melting! The earth has it’s checks and balances, we can change the environment but we can’t cause global warming! I masive Volcano will cause a thousand years of changes, we may contribute to changes but we aren’t the cause! If we take credit for warming, who would we blame for global cooling? The invoronmental facists in 1975 said Global cooling, now they say global warming, the shy is falling mentality does no cut if for me! Gores political ad movie was a joke, he scares the crap out me by making up things a saying it’s fact then tries to convince the unwashed masses to vote for him because he is the expert on Global warming! ! He is pure political BS! I think everyone in this country should read the Koto global warming treaty, is so pathetic even Klinton couldn’t make it pass! It would threaten our lively hood, gas would be 7.50 a gallon we would be restricted to 15 gallons a week, also we could not use our military planes to monitor the world because we would restricted on the amount of fuel the military could use, there would be no training our soldiers except by the UN, with no live amo at all, read it you will puke! We would all be living in UN sustainable developement cities and ride bikes and walk to work, with no freedoms, and the emerging poluting countries China India Mexico would have no restrictions until 2020!. Read it, what a farse by the left!

Boy, do you have your facts mixed up! Global warming is a very real threat and is showing other activity besides seismic and volcanic activity (though I agree with you with the possibility that there can be some volcanic activity causing warming, hence the aforementioned effects.) This CANNOT explain however, effects such as the well-documented temperature rise found globally- this past century was the hottest ever on record, and this summer it was recorded as the second hottest ever! As for Al Gore and his movie on global warming, while I did not see it, I have studied enough about the subject that I know that global warming IS not just a half-brained hypothesis concocted by some mad scientist or crazed environmentalist! If we did change from a petroleum-based society to an alternatively fueled one, it would be a major transition, true, but after the change was complete our lives would be better, and yes if we followed such practices as developing sustainable cities, and used bicycles, this type of environment could transform society to be one where we could get closer to our neighbors, instead of being increasingly isolative in this fragmented society of ours! Please take a look at the scientific facts about global warming, and open your eyes to a more environmentally friendly society. The possibilities could be much better than you think!
Change can be a good thing. Peace.

The comments made by James are the very reason global warming is as bad as it is today. The United States and I will go as far to say the majority of the world is full of these ignorant people who fail to realize what is really happening. It’s the money hungry, materialistic, sit on the couch fat, don’t want to open a book and learn for yourself, ignorant attitude that is killing us. And by us I mean the entire world; human kind and most every living organism down to the cyanobacteria that form the basis for the life of larger organisms on this earth, all dead. Education and enlightenment is the key to our survival. I too have not seen Gore’s movie, but I’m sure I could come up with something close to it if I tried to make my own. Global Warming from vocanoes, quakes, industrialization from growing nations, methane production, and the list goes on…..this is no joke people. I can tell you one thing for certain, all of the reasons in the book for global warming stem from one main source…OVERPOPULATION. Too many people, not enough resources and way too much waste. By the way, it’s Kyoto Protocol, and Clinton. I cannot believe how ignorant some people are.

I once mapped oil & gas wells in theU.S.especially along the gulf coast. In 1983 the Arabs deliberately killed domestic production by selling their oil for a mere 50 cents/barrel. All wells were immediately capped until the price was restored. There is no shortage of reserves. in 1983 deep well drilling was discovered to tap 10 x the reserves every 10,000 ft.deeper in existing fields.Offshore reserves are huge.World demand for oil will only increase. Though oil does produce greenhouse gases, the real culprit is soot from burning coal and vegetation clearing by fire for agriculture in 3rd world countries.soot particles in clouds reflect sunlight ‘Global Dimming’ reducing solar energy (now over 10%) needed to oxidize sea water into vapor.’ergo’ less rain, heat index rises, drought, famine, volcano activity and warmer temps at North Pole melting ice, further cooling ocean surface temp adds to reduction of vapor into cloud process
to produce much-needed rain near equator and elsewhere.Burning of rainforest for china’s demand for wood products and clearing for agriculture further exaserbates the problem. some argue that all this burning (not to mention wildfires from lack of rain) is still not comparable to ash from a good-sized volcano. I beg to differ.Global satellites already show a gross lack of vegetation world-wide.Regions below the North Pole are very green.A world-wide ban on excessive burning of coal and vegetation, new construction using anything but wood, and a mandatory price fix at the pump will cure all our ills.

In light of current conflicts in the Middle East, which are perhaps intensified by the fact that so much of the most accessible oil (60% I believe) is there. Minimizing our dependency on dirt cheap oil seems a worthy goal. Conservation, and efficiency improvements, can help the US maintain our living standards as other nations industrialize and grab more oil. It is nice to think that eventually, when oil prices robustly exceed some threshold, obtainable oil reserves that are indisputably claims of the USA may again be competitive. It would be nice to be a net oil exporter again:) Having cleaner coal options, and widespread waste to energy conversion, can make us yet more productive and prosperous.
Minimizing wasteful burning of all fuels is a good aim. Alternative energy sources, and resource flexibility, increase global security in the face of whatever natural disasters or human induced challenges ahead. Sudden price jumps due to a pipeline failure or regional conflict are undesired. I don’t advocate panic, but preparation to be capable of handling the worst predictions makes sense. Raising vehicle fuel efficiency, and emission reduction standards helps many breath easier, which effects health care costs and worker productivity.
If we learn that Global Warming Theory is a gross misinturpretation of circumstantial evidence, I won’t be angry about having changed my lifestyle. I still breath easier, and feel healthier biking to work. Even with my allergies, I love the vegetation and park refuges that people like myself work hard to promote in urban areas like Minneapolis, MN. I like that my compost feeds healthy soil, that sustains my lawn and urban garden through most drought. I like that water rarely runs off my property, thus my land is not part of Minnesota’s contribution to the Dead Zone where the Mississippi reaches the gulf of Mexico. We have lost so much natural wealth to wastfulness and disrespect of God’s gifts. It feels better on my soul to nurture and make the most of what we have.
Regardless of signing some Koto Global Warmin’ Treaty. Conservation & land stewardship are vital investments in our future. Population itself is not the issue yet if we better used our resources. This is not a reduction of our freedom if we take initiative. We create jobs and prosperity as others seek our expertise.
What worries me is that human carelessness and disregard limits the options avaiable to us. To do that we need to educate more engineers than we do today. New jobs are out there, but Americans may be to complacent to all keep pace.
That disturbs me.
Reprocessing nuclear waste into fuel would be great for the environment, if we could trust managers not to cut corners in pursuit of personal gain. Unfortunatly a friend of mine has now spent the majority of his career containing horrific mistakes built mostly by the US Navy. I say horrific because most the failures, according to this friend, involved disregard of accepted safety recommendations. Earthquakes far from known faults don’t simplify design or containment considerations. Nor does climate change potential simplify design of flood control structures. If we don’t have many capable engineers to address these issues we will not merely fall behind. We will face a judgment day of natural consequences that no amount of denial or whining about lost freedom can save us from.
We will collectively be judged by our actions.
Learn, adapt, and prosper.

I’m kind of puzzled here. People used to think that fossil fuel burning caused a hole in the ozone layer. Now that the hole is closing, we have even more global warming.
Basically, no one knows exactly for sure why this is happening. Putting all these legal caps and price fixes on fuel isn’t really going to stop people from using fuel. Everybody has a potential “fix,” but no one has a real solution.
One thing no one seems to mention is whether or not the sun is experiencing high activity. I’m sure that if the sun were more active than it has in recent centuries that that could be the reason for the higher temperatures.

‘GLOBAL DIMMING’ CAUSED BY MAN-MADE SMOKE AND ASH EMISSIONS IS FAST APPROACHING 20 PER CENT IN REGIONS DOWN-WIND OF HEAVILY INDUSTRIALIZED NATIONS SUCH AS INDIA AND CHINA,ALL INDUSTRY GLOBALLY. REDUCED SOLAR ENERGY BLOCKS THE TRANSFER OF SEA WATER INTO VAPOR RESULTING IN DROUGHT CONDITIONS . AT THE SAME TIME THE DIMMING OF THE SUN HAS SAVED US FROM A MUCH WORSE FATE, IT HAS LOWERED TEMPERATURES THAT WOULD OTHERWISE COOK US ALIVE DUE TO GREENHOUSE GASES. WE CAN”T STOP THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD FROM BURNING FOSSIL FUELS,AS MUCH AS WE WOULD LIKE TO. IF THEY WERE TO ALL STOP PRODUCING SOOT AND ASH TOMORROW THINGS WOULD GET REALLY HOT AND VIRTUALLY “STOP TRAFFIC”.VOLCANIC ACTIVITY IS NOT THE CULPRIT HERE ALTHOUGH IT IS MELTING THE NORTH POLE THIS IS A NATURAL EVENT THAT OCCURS PERIODICALLY

All of these catastrophies and betrayals on themselves by humanity were predicted by the son of God Jesus Christ around 2000 years ago. These prophecies were made by him so that when they happen, we will know that his is the true son of God and we rejoice at his prompt arrival.
When anyone makes a prediction and it doesn`t come true they are not true. If anyone makes a prediction and it comes true the prediction must have come from God because only he knows the future and they are true.

Lauren,
the sun is cooling, not getting hotter… CFCs & etc is what created the ozone hole.
James, unless you’re joking, and by the way you spell I suspect you aren’t - you’re a booger-eating moron.
If BC Canada can successfully run city buses powered by hydrogen (from water, NOT fossil fuels), so can this messed up country. As for the ‘puzzle’ over infrastructure - let WallyMart and 7-11s sell containerized hydrogen the same way they sell propane, now. If there isn’t a 7-11 or WallyMart in every city in this screwed up country, then I woke up in Bolivia this morning.
Stop importing everything under the sun.
Stop letting companies produce crap we can’t make them recycle - as Germany does.
Stop buying stick-built houses from imported sticks. Since the US is fast running out of timber we can ‘harvest’, we are now raping British Columbia Canada, Brazil and Indonesia. Force the lumber barons to live down-slope from clear-cuts.
All the cheap furniture sold at IKEA and other furniture stores has to be made with raw materials from somewhere…
Stop dumping our hazardous waste in Africa!!!
Here are some solutions, people:
Hydrogen powered vehicles. With the hydrogen coming from water, not petroleum.
Bergey wind generators for small business, school & home power (until we can pull our head out and get home hydrogen power going)
Batteries founded on better technology.
Rammed Earth or adobe buildings -especially homes. They’re bullet-proof, flood & fire-proof, vermin & insect-proof, earthquake, hurricane and cyclone proof dwellings. The only timber you need is for the roof and some furnishings. They outlast generations of families.
Oh, and if there are any unemployed painters reading this, somebody needs to go finish the big red bulleyes on the roofs of the White House, RJ Reynolds & the Phillip Morris buildings…
OK, I’m done.

That all sounds good but lets face it, some of those things are just not practical.
If you can show people a way to actually impliment those ideas then I bet a lot of people would jump on board with them, even if they don’t agree with Global Warming.
Until then, no matter what people say, praticality will most always win.

I hear a lot of this n that, about how fires and soot n etc. are causing global warmng, and about how we ourselves are causing it, true we could just up n quit flying drivning etc. But anawer just one small question for me, why is it we never hear that maybe just one big percentage of global warming, if it’s really happening, is caused partially due to space shuttles? Think about it, we had a space shuttle explode not long ago, but not once did ne 1 think hey maybe that had a bit to do with it…..HELLO…..that exploded in the sky, and a lot closer than us here on earth…..also space shuttles fly in to space, and if I am not mistaken, maybe I just imagine things, but I do believe it has fire coming out of it which causes the same thing as our cars….EMISSIONS…and yes we could just ride a bike, or walk everywhere, or maybe go back way back in time n go horseback everywhere, or by boat to other countries, rather than fly or drive, but here is one thing I have not once heard one of u say…..If we done that and other countries did not…..EXACTLY HOW MANY SEPT. 11TH’S WOULD OUR COUNTRY HAVE TO GO THROUGH, AND HOW MANY OF OUR LIVES WOULD BE WASTED OVER PRESERVING FUEL? I myself find it more sensible, to say forget it, as long as other countries are still driving flying and shooting off space shuttles, what big difference are we really gonna make besides opening our doors to find no country left, because we preserved fuel, to try n save our planet, but in the process othr countries did not, and our country stands no more……I preferr to keep my country in one piece as much as possible, without opening our doors, with no defense against our predators……Sorry if no one agrees with me, but I call it as I see it!
12. Mike | November 30th, 2006 at 6:40 pm
What the hell are you saying. A fucking space shuttle .
I heard about some new turbine that is used to produce electricity at 200F, the same amount of energy produced by the current systems which make electricity at 600-800 degrees. Cool. I also heard we can now filter out sea water to fill up pools and facilities like that. Cool. As for gasoline dont we have hydrogen power coming? I thought it was on the horizon. If our country committed to these alternative forms of energy, it would be nice. nice to the world. Until then we cant speculate so goddamn much about this shit, it’s getting worse and we gotta roll with it.

this are the cause of continental drift theory
15. Mark | February 2nd, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Space Shuttle? Wow…
Anyways, I don’t buy this Global warming stuff, there are many things in history scientists “knew” then people like Albert Einstein come along and show everyone how dumb they are. I do think we need to get an alternative fuel besides gasoline, that’s a flippin great idea but the oil companies want the world to stay dependent on oil since they make so much money. The UN (and the US too for that matter) need to but out of everyone’s business instead of trying to tell everyone to listen to them. They are using Global Warming to try and get everyone to abide by some rules they make. If rules about Global Warming are forced on us, there will be more rules, and our liberty will continue to slowly erode away day by day.
16. lboyd | February 4th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
since i know little of geophysics, i thought i’d turn to this board to find an answer or educated opinions to a question that’s been irking me:
Consider first the change in the earth’s weight distribution in regard to drilling for oil and other resources, cutting down forests, ice caps melting, transporting mass quantities of natural resources to other areas of the world, growing populations, etc. How does this affect the center of gravity of the earth and, consequently, the tectonic movement within the earth?
I’m thinking swiss cheese style planet….and definitely not a good outcome for us…
any thoughts?

18. hotflash | February 7th, 2007 at 10:06 am
I thought it was oceanic warming, not global warming that is causing the temp. change. Also didn’t the antartic ice core drilling results tell us that there has been an ice age every 10,000 years or so. Evidence from these cores show a lot of temp. fluctuations before an ice age started. This has been proved to be going on for 600,000 years like clockwork, and “global warming” will not change the fact that the glaciation for the next ice age will start soon weather third world countrys are lighting fires or our cirica 1985 space shuttles are exploding in the atmosphere. Note that around 1840 I think, 5,000 feet of the top of Tambora exploded and there was no summer that year. I also think Volcanos are contributing greatly to oceanic warming, there is a few erupting underwater near the ice shelf in Antartica that is collapsing, but please be aware of the ice sheets growing on the other side of Antartic and I think there is one in I believe Sweden that is growing at an alarming rate.

Greenland poses world-wide instantaneous sea surge risk which has not yet been correctly addressed by glaciologists. FIPC are preparing a complaint on this for the United Nations.
“How Melting Glaciers Alter Earth’s Surface, Spur Quakes, Volcanoes” by Sharon Begley is an excellent article on the subject of ice sheet interactions within the earth system. However, it misses out one more subject matter which is the effect of surface load on the locality of the Magnetic North Pole.
The migration of the Magnetic North Pole is incorrectly assigned to a theroretised cause ‘magnetic pole switching” which is the reversion of the magnetic polarity that sometimes occur in the direction of the magnetic field. However, air pressure changes are known to affect the exact position of the Magnetic North Pole and FIPC complaint relates to the magnitude of ice loss to the air pressure variation which must therefore effect the pole.
The isostatic rebound that results from loss of Greenland’s ice sheet can destabilise it because this formerly firmly anchored stable ice sheet is now loosened from the previously frozen elevated grounds (= permafrost moorings of ice cemented to the ground). Loose ice slides downwards due to gravity and extremely slippery nature of wet ice. When meltwater is abundant, it not only lubricates but also lifts up ice sheet acting as a smoothener that fills by water various rough cavities and dents under the ice on the bedrocks that hold solid ice in place.
As a result of ice and melt water tending to come downwards it accummulates in Greenland on lower altitude regions where all ice would fall from uphill elevations immediately were it not that these spaces are mostly occupied by ice already. Some water manages to make it down as meltwater and may even refreeze onto above ice and then anoter season adds more ice.
Meltwater and meltwater refrozen has higher densities than the snow compressed into ice. This increases surface load
and the increasing pressure from above can stress bedrocks downwards and more importantly, outwards, where there are weak sections on the coastal rock periphery.

Instead on focusing on global warming and its effects we should be focusing on what we can do to stop it. Millions of dollars are being spent into funding to try and discover renewable sources of enery but they are alredy available. Instead they money should be spend putting these energy sources into practice.

I am an Meteorology Major, I do not believe in human caused global warming. I believe it is a completely political issue, a scare tactic used by politicians to win votes. In the Meteorology dept. at my university 99% of the students and all the faculty believe that global warming is not caused by humans, and that we are in a normal cycle of warming and cooling.
Do not fall into the Micheal Moore, Al Gore global warming farce. Apparently they care a lot about “global warming” when they fly around in there private jets. They release more “greenhouse gases” in one flight than I will release in my life with my 14mpg SUV.

I came to this blog from a google search and found ‘MOST’ of the entries interesting with many comments that should be taken into consideration. The one thing that is common amongst the Anti Expect reality non Green house effect group is there apparent collective stupidity. Rush Limbaugh must really the ability to control these mind numbed robots.
Look at the temp charts and see for yourself. It is not an anomaly of sun spots, Increased sun activity, or just some natural ebb and flow of nature. It quite obvious that or thirst for fossil fuel is at the root of this phenomenon. There have always been volcanoes, axis tilt, and reversing magnetic poles and yet the world survives. We will survive this episode but it will require that we think with our heads and not our ideology.
Jebster, get with it. Stop listening to the fools who care about nothing more than gaining more dollars at the cost of anyone who gets in their way.
Go to Noaa.com and start looking at the data. It’s real and it’s measurable.

It’s funny to see the pius and stoic humans think they can control everything. Control the climate of the earth? Who do you think you are? Arrogant fools. You better start preparing for adaptation and quit this politically driven nonsense of greenhouse gases as a sole reason for warming.
It is the oceanic warming that is the culprit. Underwater volcanic activity is at an all time high. As goes the oceans, so goes the weather. Any scientist worith their salt could tell you that. Yet, those set to make money off of their meaningless CO2-based solutions aren’t about to give up their power.
But this article has reached the ulitmate height of absurdity. Global warming causes earthquakes? LOL. That’s like saying dog crap causes dogs.

at school we learning all about this global warming phenomenon.. we learn about it so much that it’s coming out my ears but While we may think for a few minutes that we need to be more environmentally conscious there are very few of us who actually take the time which is needed. The different reports about the effects of global warming needs our consideration as some of the causes of global warming are caused by us and our everyday activity. You may ask how this is possible. The answers are all staring us in the face if we just choose to look at them. The first place to look for some of the causes and effects of global warming is in our cities.
the only way to combat global warming is for everyone to pull together, whether you believe it or not cause the fact of the matter is that the environment is being harmed. we have exploited the environment and we owe it to the environment to start taking a more positive aproch to conserving it.

It looks like everyone has some kind of answer to this problem..? But the problem has a history well beyond our time on this planet and as we all sit her in awe of how important we are…. Our friends from the past who we now use to propel our cars and heat our houses never smoked or drove a cars or burned down trees…… They lived during a hot cycle and died without doing anything to cause there death…. Globel warming is a fact but it is not caused by our stupidity it is part of the life cycle of this planet…. and tomorrow a rock from the sky can fall and wipe us all out, or a hurricane can clean the country side… But Paying for Carbon Credits to make you feel better about your purchase of a HumVee well you people are just plain dumb… Common sense is a very important thing that the left would rather forget and hope that everyone else does too…. without oil the us is powerless we need to drill NOW and go Nuc….for our electricity…. doing so will stabilize our economy and keep us the # 1 power in the world…

Al gore is a fool and so is anyone who buys this shit. all people who know and understand planetary cycles knows that that weather changes according to the position of planets and solar systems. The sun is getting hotter maybe that is why we are getting hotter. If you think you are the cause of the problem then you are being brainwashed by this green movement into thinking you are the problem and if you look at the solution then you might change your mind because their solution is to get rid of you and to place the remaining peoples into controlled cities and all land ceased and preserved. research the Kyoto agreement and also propaganda 21.

You know the envoromentalist said in the 70s and 80s that by now no matter what we did we would have to be wearing 1000spf sun screen just to walk outside. Yet here we are. They said even if were to get rid of all the CFCs and stop using them immediately that a single molecule of CFC takes 50 years to reach the ozone and then destroys ozone molecules for 100 years. Yet here we are not cooking. I don’t know just a thought.

I really feel that if we try to save the planet we can all go to the Hard Rock Cafe forever–I also feel that if all of the CFCs are reduced and we do all the things we feel are the right things to do and we will feel OK about our feelings about what we are doing and feeling. Althought I have no proof, I really feel like we can make a difference, all of us together, in floppy hats, bare feet, having group sex, and preventing additional people from creating addiional global warming and additional people living free from HIV. I like polar bears and kool aid- and I like the Icee Bear, maybe if we alll started drinking Icees again, Global warming would go away, so we could all start worrying about the people we can never save again-That’s really cool Koolaid Hmm save the world with Icees???-I need a cause, and I’m kinda looking for a bigger newer “save the world” cause than global warming–I really need to make a difference, and I’m having a hard time convincing you all to jump on the global warming band wagon- please let me know what you all are really feeling, I need a stock tip!!!!
