Wow, that's first I have heard about Frued's technique. I've always imagined him pinging for obscure metophirical questions... and of course chewing on cigars and blowing smoke.

Thanks for the awakening.. and a whole new Frued to wonder about. His technique. I surmise, is not particularly unique as it seems to reflect the penultimate goal of a teacher. There of course are teachers who shove it down their stidents throats or wax and wane about theoertical questions that have rhyme and reason, but no lesson, it seems only a teacher who earns respect even has a half a chance of making it to step 2 or 3, whichever one works.

I also like the fact that he blurs the line between the well and unwell, claiming he can teach anybody.

The whole fending for yourself is made easier by way of accurate empathy that can target the students fear factor and acknowledge it. Not to brag, because I can't anyway, but I once accomplished this with afterburners on with a friend who was in his head in major way. I managed to talk him down out of necessity because he terrified and hiding it pretty well. It's all about gaining trust and asking the right questions. Funny though I don't recall discussing many of the Oedipal motifs.

It's the setting them free that is an issue for the profession.
