Mars Phoenix lands successfully
May 26th, 2008
On the good news side, Mars Phoenix landed successfully on Mars and has already sent back pictuires. As one who faked being sick so I could stay home and watch the Mercury launch with Alan Shepard on board, I still get an incredible thrill:

Now if only the same energy, enthusiasm and resources could go to tackling global warming.

I share your feelings of what a thrill it is and the addition to the world’s knowledge of the universe . . . but, also let’s not fool ourselves: the space program is a basically a military program, whose main purpose is to dominate Space as well as test out the latest military theories. Remember these are the guys who brought you plutonium in space. The rest is pretty decoration. I can live without Tang and pens that write upside down.
