For someone who is living in the UK it is pretty shocking to hear the intricate details of this. I have picked up bits and bobs; even hearing that some American's think torture should be used on children if deemed necessary.

I'm curious what constitutes unethical behavior by the APA.

I assume intimate relationships with patients is disallowed, however torture is not.

In the 60's the APA became a tool of the CIA (mkultra), to an extent never fully revealed (CIA shredded documents, thanks Canada for preserving history).

Are there mechanisms to strip the people involved of their credentials? It chills me to think that torturers (or consultants to them, as it were) will one day be attempting to give therapy to unsuspecting individuals.

Should ethical members of the profession disavow and disassociate with the APA? Is reform within the organization possible?

If 'ethical members' continue to associate with the APA, should they be judged as complicate and responsible for all of this?

(in regards to 'guilt by association', while it may be legal to have a membership in say... the klan... it is obviously reasonable to judge people for such membership and treat them accordingly).

And to completely damn all of those involved with torture; it doesn't work - those that practice it are engaging in an ineffective practice (Ie: they are incompetent as well as immoral).

How would you suggest that a psych professional defends their association with the APA?

[email response would greatly be appreciated to this post if you respond at all].

Thank you for being one of the good guys.
