Obama throws meatless bone to gays
June 17th, 2009
The Obama administration threw a bone to gays today. Unfortunately, it was one with no meat whatsoever on it. It offers benefits to gay couples like, get this, “relocation insurance!” Health insurance is off the table because of the Defense of Marriage Act that the Obama Justice Department defended so vigorously last week by comparing gay marriages to incestuous relationships. Apparently, Obama, as the first African-American President, is determined to prove that he loves discrimination like the best of the “bipartisan” reactionaries he loves to court.

We already know he says he does not support a Federal Marriage Amendment. He believes states should have the right to decide. He’s actually smart, because moving too quickly, has usually brought trouble.
Don’t forget the Clinton years….promises brought to lift the ban on gay people serving in the military. What happened? An effort lead by Colin Powell, another African American, to pass Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the current policy, that seems to be hanging on, but behind the scenes, I’ve heard, like a chad in FL.
Let’s remember, it’s not about anyone’s racial background, let’s throw pies back at Anita Bryant for her OJ gay-hating campaign to Save our Children. We know it’s crazy. And actually, gay marriage and incestuous relationships…..I wouldn’t hesitate to describe some of our small town relationship hopping to “incestuous within”….but that’s not what people understand culturally, it’s applied as a norm, to what “most people” recognize as incest. And that yes, makes us appear sick and demented. Oh well. Can’t control the Prez…but he needs a little better PR I’d say. It’s far to critical to to point out his race, alongside his discrimination practices when white people and other straight people and women have participated in discrimination WAY before this President, k? Give him a frickin’ break.
What he did, was basically all he could do. The rest I think takes congressional approval—to give Fed. employees health benefits, and whenif they do that, he wouldn’t veto it….c’mon. Patience. We continue to be diplomatic, state our cases, the best we can do is to be “out” and honest with people who don’t understand our personal truths, and give them some time. He IS currently bound by DOMA….and do we all remember where *that* came from? Yeah…so relax. Would Fed. employees rather NOT have relocation assistance? Or will they take it and say, one down, a few more to go?
Would you rather bash Obama’s bipartisanship, and know that he’s teaching them in baby steps, or did you already forget the hate monger we just got rid of?
I rest my case….and I’m a lesbian. Thanks.
