How the internet works

I’ve been busy getting a research grant finished and submitted. Hence no postings the last few days. But it went in yesterday, so I’ll start to exist again soon, just as soon as I catch up on everything else I haven’t done the last few weeks. [For those not familiar with the research world, it is frequently considered a miracle if someone finishing a grant remembers how to utter any sounds not connected with the grant during the final days before submission. Then begins the painful wait to find out if the suffering was worth it.]

In the meantime, here’s an explanation of how the internet works:

Music: Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon — Love Me, I’m a Liberal

I hae just discovered that Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon have updated Phil Och’s classic “Love Me, I’m a Liberal“. This was done in 2007, so it is a bit out of date, but all too timely:

New Years, 2010: Last night I had the strangest dream

New Years Day, 2010. Time to dream.

Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream (John Denver, 1971):

But in case dreams aren’t enough, It’s also time to act.

I Ain’t A Marching Anymore (LiliAna Rose):

Phil Ochs’ lyrics

Oh I marched to the battle of New Orleans
At the end of the early British war
The young land started growing
The young blood started flowing
But I ain’t marchin’ anymore

For I’ve killed my share of Indians
In a thousand different fights
I was there at the Little Big Horn
I heard many men lying I saw many more dying
But I ain’t marchin’ anymore

It’s always the old to lead us to the war
It’s always the young to fall
Now look at all we’ve won with the saber and the gun
Tell me is it worth it all

For I stole California from the Mexican land
Fought in the bloody Civil War
Yes I even killed my brothers
And so many others But I ain’t marchin’ anymore

For I marched to the battles of the German trench
In a war that was bound to end all wars
Oh I must have killed a million men
And now they want me back again
But I ain’t marchin’ anymore

For I flew the final mission in the Japanese sky
Set off the mighty mushroom roar
When I saw the cities burning I knew that I was learning
That I ain’t marchin’ anymore

Now the labor leader’s screamin’
when they close the missile plants,
United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore,
Call it “Peace” or call it “Treason,”
Call it “Love” or call it “Reason,”
But I ain’t marchin’ any more,
No I ain’t marchin’ any more

Music: The Klein Four — Finite Simple Group (of Order Two)

My brother-in-law sent me this video. [Tells you something about my family!] It is posted here for those among my readers who share our love of mathematics. The rest of you can ponder what in the world they are singing about:

Liam Clancy, RIP

Liam Clancy was one of my first loves from folks music. For years I listened over and over again to his first album. Today brings news that he has passed away. You know you’re getting old when your early love’s die.

Here’s a reminder of what he brought to us. The first two songs are performances of songs from from that great first album. [BTW, that album was one of those that never sounded as good when put on CD]

Sanda Thanivela: Music from Sri Lanka

Lovely music from an 11-year old girl from Sri Lanka:

Here is what AmericaBlog says about it:

Our cousin told us about his step-daughter’s great success in Sri Lanka’s equivalent to The X-Factor called “London Star.” “Shanu” is only 11 years old and has made it through the semi-finals of the show. It’s quite a different musical sound than we’re used to in the west but she has a very sweet voice that anyone can appreciate. I can’t even begin to imagine how I might have done at such a young age. Besides being on the TV show, she’s also had a few interviews with Sri Lankan TV. Shanuka is singing in Sinhala, which is her mother tongue. She also speaks perfect English.
